Poppy Jenkins is a lovely and sweet read about a second chance romance between two friends, Poppy and Rosie who were inseparable as children and had a harsh falling out in highschool. Poppy stayed in the charming small town of Wells in Wales, and never spoke to or of her childhood friend until Rosie came back into town to help her ailing father.The two reconnect and struggle to come out to each other about being gay.Along the way, small town life surrounds them, sometimes in support, sometimes in judgement.Poppy is an effervescent character with a love for life and a cherry disposition. Rosie is more jaded by the world, and they struggle to meet in the middle.Honestly, this story is sweet enough that I would recommend to anyone looking for a lovely romance. The writing is beautiful, (even if as an American, I am not accustomed to many of the slightly different Wales/British idioms and names), I couldn't help but get swept away in the land and story. The one thing that seems to be consistent with some in this genre is the use of unrealistic non communication to generate angst. For me the story follows a common template found in many other books for this genre and the angst seems to be the only constant in the story. I have read other stories where the relationship is part of a more involved plot and not the central focus which makes for a compelling story - at least for me. While a different genre Tanya Allan's books combine a real plot as well as the transgender aspect of the story. I have read other books by Clare and there is no doubt she has the ability to craft a story with a central plot that surrounds the lesbian part of the story.For all that the story was well written, proofed and edited. I am in no way being deliberately negative just giving my point of view.I appreciate that many others probably won't share my views and that's fine as everyone has different expectations.
